‘American Idol’ 11 Recap: Top 10 Results (Spoilers for UK Residents)

We have our Top 10, and every single one of them will be on tour this summer. To tease what we might expect from this group, the Top 10 perform “For the Longest Time.”

Ford Music Video: Kelly Clarkson’s “You Found Me”

Speaking of the tour, right before the results, Ryan Seacrest mentions that last week was all about finding out who would be a part of the tour. He goes on to say that this week is all about finding out who gets to move into the mansion. Whoopee! I don’t remember the finalists in past years ever moving into the mansion this late in the competition. Usually it happens right after we find out the Top 12/13. Seems kinda strange, but I hope we get to see footage of them getting excited over the move-in and getting a tour inside the mansion and all that.

The first three finalists to face the results are Hollie Cavanagh, Skylar Laine and Elise Testone (during the recap, Jimmy Iovine says he loved Elise’s performance). I have this bad feeling that Elise may be in danger. Hollie is safe! Uh oh, Elise. Skylar is also safe. But wait…Elise is safe as well. All three will be heading to the mansion!

Lana Del Rey performs “Video Games.” Umm…okay? How is she an overnight success again? She’s worse than every single one of the Top 10.

It’s Steven Tyler’s birthday and so the show has a surprise for him. From being the Top 10, out comes fellow Aerosmith bandmate Joe Perry to play “Happy Birthday” on the electric guitar as the contestants join in singing to Steven as well.

Next to be called to the stage are DeAndre Brackensick, Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez. Jimmy Iovine loved Jessica. To me, it’s obvious that DeAndre’s not going to do well, especially since he’s up against Jessica (and even Josh). Jessica is safe, as is Joshua. That means DeAndre is in the Bottom 3.

Haley Reinhart, season 9 third-place finalist, performs her debut single, “Free.” I’m not sure, but this may be the first time I’m hearing this song. And there were moments throughout that I really liked; the style suits Haley’s musical stylings really well. I think I’m going to like this song more and more each time I listen to it.

The rest are up to face the results: Erika Van Pelt, Heejun Han, Phillip Phillips and Colton Dixon (Jimmy’s favorites here were Colton and Erika). It seems obvious that Heejun and Erika are in trouble here; Colton’s not going anywhere and I doubt Phillip will be either. Colton’s safe. Erika is in the Bottom 3. Phillip is safe. And Heejun is also in the Bottom 3.

Bottom 3:
DeAndre Brackensick (Correct Prediction)
Erika Van Pelt
Heejun Han (Correct Prediction)

Who’s the first to find out they’re safe of this Bottom group? It’s DeAndre…really? Wow! And to think I predicted him going home. Erika’s going home, isn’t she? Yep, Erika has received the least number of votes and will have to sing for the Judges Save; Heejun is safe. Erika reprises “I Believe in You and Me.” The judges to not save her, which means that Erika Van Pelt is eliminated.

Erika Van Pelt

After the performance episode this week, I was sure Erika would be safe because I believed that her new look would get her more votes. Guess not. As much as I love both Erika and Elise, the problem with them is that voters aren’t connecting with them, no matter how good they may be.

So how does everything stack up now? Both DeAndre and Heejun made their first appearances in the Bottom 3. And I’m giving Heejun no more than two weeks before he’s gone. And I wouldn’t be surprised if DeAndre is cut sometime in the next three weeks. With DeAndre, he’s had some great moments in this show; just go back to “Master Blaster.”

Next week, the Top 9 will perform songs from their own Idols (and maybe we’ll see them move into the mansion?) I’ve been complaining about the themes lately. But next week seems to be a more general theme and could allow the singers to pick something that’s more up their alley and allow them to shine. Plus, both Nicki Minaj and last year’s winner, Scotty McCreery, will perform. See ya then…
