‘American Idol’ 11 Recap: Top 5 Results (Spoilers for UK Residents)

American Idol 11: Top 5 Results Show

US Air Date:
Thursday, May 3, 2012 (8-9pm)

UK Air Date:
Friday, May 4, 2012 (9-10pm, ITV2)

Everything’s coming down to the wire, Idol fans! There’s only five contestants left and we’re only a few weeks away from crowning an 11th winner. And who gets another chance to head there? Well, right off the bat, we know that Joshua Ledet is safe! (By the way, Jimmy Iovine loved both of his performances.)

Ford Music Video: “Dream Life”

Coldplay performs “Paradise.” Something about that chorus is a little annoying…anyone else think that?

Now for the pairings: Hollie Cavanagh and Phillip Phillips are up next to find out their results. Jimmy liked Hollie’s Round 1 performance, of “River Deep Mountain High.” Huh, that’s interesting…I would actually say her Round 2 number was the better one. Hollie is in the Bottom 2, which means that Phillip is safe. Even though Phillip completely deserves to be in the Bottom, there’s no surprise with this outcome. Phillip needs to bring something fresh as well as new energy to his songs from now on or it’s going to be a little boring to see him win (which we all know he will).

Carrie Underwood returns to the stage that made her a star and performs “Blown Away.” I’m a little disappointed; I was hoping she would perform her single, “Good Girls”–I love that song.

Finally, Skylar Laine and Jessica Sanchez. Well, I think we all know what’s going to happen with this pairing. Jimmy liked Jessica’s Round 2 song, “You Are So Beautiful.” Speaking of her, Jessica is safe! Skylar is in the Bottom 2.

Bottom 2:
Hollie Cavanagh (Correct Prediction)
Skylar Laine (Correct Prediction)

Coldplay returns to perform “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.”

After nearly 60 million votes were cast last night, the person leaving the competition is…Skylar Laine. Hollie is safe.

Eliminated:
Skylar Laine

Skylar closes out the show with “Gunpowder and Lead.” This final performance as the episode closes and the credits flash past is pure Skylar through and through. Around a few weeks ago, Skylar has really come into her own and proven why she should be in this competition. She has become one of the favorites this year, and I’m really looking forward to seeing her on tour. And I really, really hope that she secures a record deal; I can see her doing country music along the lines of Kellie Pickler, that type of style.

Now it’s down to four: Phillip Phillips. Jessica Sanchez. Joshua Ledet. Hollie Cavanagh. What happens now? Hollie has managed to stay on long past anyone thought she would. That’s not a dig at her because she is talented and had one of her strongest nights this week. But in some seasons, there are certain singers that go farther than people thought imaginable and a lot of times they seem to end up in third. Maybe that’ll be her spot…unless she goes in the next round. Just like this week, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s all up in the air next time, meaning it could be anybody going home. I would be really sad if Jessica or Josh were cut next, but with only four left, there’s a strong possibility of that happening. So on this show, you never know.

Next week, the Top 4 perform (there’s a California Dreamin’ theme and an as of right now unannounced second theme). As for the guest performers? Well, Jennifer Lopez will get out from behind the judges table to perform “Dance Again.” And season 7 winner David Cook will perform “The Last Song I’ll Write For You.” See ya then…
