With hit BBC One show Eastenders already allegedly in crisis, it comes as no surprise that yet another main character is set to leave the dramatic streets of Albert Square.

Afia Masood, played by Meryl Fernandes, is the latest star to face the axe as bosses look to ‘shake up’ the show in order to reclaim the flagging viewing figures.

Meryl’s character, Afia, is married to troubled burns victim Tamwar. The couple’s marriage has been under heavy strain since the dramatic Christmas Day fire at the local B&B which saw Afia’s father, the wonky eyed Dr Yusef, loose his life while Tamwar was hospitalized with severe burns. Meryl will leave the Square next month as Afia’s and Tamwar’s marriage continues to fall apart.

An Eastenders spokesperson said,”Since the traumatic events of the fire, things have not been the same in Tamwar and Afia’s relationship. As their issues worsen, they are forced to decide whether their marriage is worth fighting for or whether they have grown apart. Meryl Fernandes recently finished filming her final scenes at EastEnders, which will be on screen next month.”
