The BizzNiz does fashion has had a great opportunity to hook up with one of the fashions Worlds brightest rising fashion designers Melika Imoru.
As founder of MelikaM, Melika Imoru has had to have a love of fashion and creativity from a young age, this love has gradually transformed into an admirable passion which is obviously seen within her beautiful pieces.
Melika went on to establish her own label, MelikaM, in 2009. After graduating with a degree in fashion and textiles Melika spent over 10 years designing for some of Britain’s best loved womenswear retailers including River Island, where she established the Vintage Me label; Miss Selfridge; Jane Norman, as head of design for their Premium collection; and ASOS amongst others. Within these roles she gained vast experience and knowledge of fast-paced fashion and had the opportunity to travel to some truly inspiring places such as India, Japan, Europe, America and the Middle East.
Each piece in the collection is imbued with her diverse cultural influences, extensive industry experience and real excitement for wearable, fun, confident fashion. Melika’s talent is evinced in her ability to produce reasonably priced clothes which combine classic femininity with accents of sparkling glamour. Her instinct and eye for trend results in a potent blend of desirable must have items.
Melika kindly took some time out of her incredibly hectic schedule to talk to The BizzNiz….
The BizzNiz: When did you realise you wanted to be involved in the Fashion industry?
Melika: I had some really supportive tutors at art college who encouraged my love of fashion and made me realise that being a designer was an attainable goal, not a childish pipe dream.
The BizzNiz: Was it a difficult trade to establish yourself in?
Melika: It is very competitive and you will get nowhere without putting in some really hard work, no matter how creative and talented you are.
The BizzNiz: Describe your brand with regards to style/look and which markets are you hoping to attract?
Melika: MelikaM’s customers are feminine, confident and fun and the range really reflects that.
The BizzNiz: Who or what influences your designs?
Melika: The customer and the knowledge of what makes women feel confident, comfortable, sexy and happy are key. I have travelled extensively throughout my life and career and feel that my design also reflects these diverse cultural influences.
The BizzNiz: If you could have any model ‘strut’ down the catwalk in your designs who would it be?
Melika: Simply, Kate Moss
The BizzNiz: Is it difficult to consistently evolve your brand to stay relevant within the ever changing fashion ‘trends’?
Melika: I come from a background of designing for the high street and there the competition to stay on top of emerging trends is fierce. This has given me the tools to be able to spot key upcoming trends, what trends will continue for several seasons, and which ones will fall away as quickly as they came. Having said that, with MelikaM, the aim is to combine these key trends with timeless elegance and flattering silhouettes, rather than slavishly following every fad.
The BizzNiz: Do you only wear your own brand? if not, which brands will you currently be seen wearing?
Melika: I love to mix a lot of vintage with MelikaM, some designer and some high street – they all have their merits.
The BizzNiz: Using your inside knowledge and experience what do you see as the next big fashion trend?
The BizzNiz: Baroque will be huge.
Melika: Where do you see MelikaM in a years time?
The BizzNiz: Bigger, better and even more fabulous than this year!
The BizzNiz: Where can we find your designs?
Melika: Visit our website www.melikam.com
We would like to thank Melika Imoru for taking the time to talk to us and we urge all the fashion junkies out there to go to the website and check out some of her stuff, it really is to die for!
