Marina and the Diamonds have returned with their second album, the shimmering ‘Electra Heart’.
Following her debut, ‘The Family Jewels’, which gained critical acclaim and a cult following back in 2010 – Marina returns with a confident successor that has its eyes firmly set on mainstream success.
The album was written and recorded in London and LA over the last 18 months while Marina was on tour. She collaborated on writing and production with the likes of Dr Luke (Katy Perry), Rick Nowels (Madonna), Liam Howe (Sneaker Pimps) and Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen).
The songs explore themes of identity, love, rejection, doomed romance and hope, infused with quintessentially English humour and eccentricity.
Marina writes and sings as if an actress playing a darkly comic role, the fragile self-aggrandising egotist of lead singer, the insecure relationship breaker of ‘Homewrecker’.
Irony is big in Marina world, and the listener is left wondering how much of the artists personal demons are being aired while being sugar coated in wit.
Sometimes she can sound a little too clever for her own good, but the quality of the songwriting and the hooks win out. Marina’s voice is clear, truly distinctive, and the melodies are carefully crafted.
‘Starring Role’ takes the acting role literally, but is a genuinely melancholic and moving song about the break-up of a relationship, with a gorgeous chorus where the vocals sore. ‘The State of dreaming’ is a classic sounding pop song, which tells of the confusion of being an artist and hints at the artist’s own anxieties.
‘Bubblegum Bitch’ is a song that is exactly as its song suggests – pure cheeky pop full of attitude, you could imagine a band like Girls Aloud singing this.
This is pop music which is as intelligent as it is accessible. The production is bang on the moment, and the songs fizz with life and sparkle.
