Hollywood acting couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have shockingly announced that they are set to divorce after 5 years of marriage.
Katie allegedly filed for divorce a few days back, citing the standard irreconcilable differences, leaving Tom feeling ‘deeply saddened’. Cruise released an official statement yesterday to confirm the news, “Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened,” said Amanda Lunberg, Tom’s official representative, “He is concentrating on his three children, please allow them their privacy to work this out.” Katie’s official spokesman also spoke on the actress’s behalf regarding the break up, he said “This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family, Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”
Rumours surrounding the couple’s break up have been spreading with many suggesting that Katie was becoming more and more concerned with Tom’s involvment in Scientology, which the actor has been heavily involved with for a number of years. Katie is reported to feel that their daughter Suri, aged 6, is now at an age where she can be easily influenced and does not want her daughter dragged into the strange, mysterious ways of the alternative Church. Entertainment website TMZ has quoted an unamed source as saying, “We’re told the couple had been arguing over Suri — that she’s now of the age where Scientology becomes a significant part of her life”.
Other reports suggest that the couple have just grown apart with Tom’s film career really starting to take off again, while Katie has been concentrating on her own work schedule, this was coupled with the fact that the family had not been seen together for months fuelling the rumours that there may have been trouble on the horizon for the fairytale couple.
Tom has also always been dogged by the rumours that he is gay and has won two lawsuits that have claimed the star preferred the company of the Male variety. Tom spoke back in May regarding his private life and addressed the rumours surrounding his sexuality, the star said “My family, my wife, they understand. It’s who I am, you just have to keep going and remember that. The other stuff? I hear it, I read it, I get it. But life is not a matter of trying to prove anything to anybody.”
Tom and Kate, or TomKat as they have been affectionately known, had a whirlwind romance that eventually culminated in Tom proposing to his love under the Eiffel Tower in 2005. The wedding was one of the Showbiz events of the year and was a true fairytale occassion with the ceremony being held in a 15th Century Castle in Rome. Fireworks painted the sky as the couple accepted their vows and became man and wife.
Things are now looking like they could get nasty as 33 year old Katie is allegedly asking for full custody of the couples daughter. As well as this, the former ‘Dawson’s Creek’ star was reported to have signed a pre-nuptial agreement at the time of the marriage which specified that she would pocket an estimated $3 million for each year of the couple’s union, this would now total $15 million!
Tom, who is 50 next month, already has two failed marriages under his belt. The ‘Mission Impossible’ star split with his first wife, actress Mimi Rodgers, in 1990 before he hooked up with Australian actress Nicole Kidman. Their union ceased after 11 years in 2001 before Tom got together with Katie in 2005.
TomKat are the latest Hollywood couple to join the ever growing list of failed courtships within the last year, first Russell Brand and Katy Perry, then Seal and Heidi Klum and then, just a couple of week back, Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis announced their split. We are starting to think Hollywood is not the best place to have a long and successful marriage!
